NEWS: GROWTH4BLUE Project Showcased at the International Conference of Balkan and Black Sea Regions in Patras

The project GROWTH4BLUE – Generating Regional Opportunities for Workforce Transformation and High-tech Innovation in the Blue Economy of the Adriatic-Ionian Region successfully participated in the International Conference of Balkan and Black Sea Regions, held in Patras, Greece, on 27–29 May 2026.

The international conference, organized by the Balkan and Black Sea Commission of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR), in cooperation with the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC) and the Region of Western Greece, brought together representatives of European institutions, regional authorities, international organizations, academia, and industry to discuss key challenges and opportunities for the wider Balkan and Black Sea region.

As part of the conference programme, the GROWTH4BLUE project was presented as an innovative initiative promoting sustainable growth, workforce transformation, and technological advancement in the Blue Economy across the Adriatic-Ionian region. The project’s participation highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation among regions, research institutions, businesses, and policymakers to address emerging skills needs and accelerate innovation in maritime and coastal sectors.

EUSAIR Pillar 1 Coordinator Mr. Michael Chatziefstathiou underlined the importance of investing in innovation, skills development, and regional cooperation as key drivers for sustainable blue growth in the Adriatic-Ionian area. He noted that projects such as GROWTH4BLUE play a crucial role in translating macro-regional priorities into tangible actions that support competitiveness, employment, and technological advancement.

During the discussions, project representatives emphasized GROWTH4BLUE’s mission to bridge the gap between labour market demands and workforce competencies in strategic Blue Economy sectors, including maritime transport, shipbuilding, fisheries, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, renewable marine energy, and coastal tourism. Particular attention was given to the project’s efforts in analysing labour market trends, identifying future skills requirements, and developing tools and strategies that support employment, innovation, and sustainable economic development.

The conference provided an excellent platform for exchanging knowledge and best practices with stakeholders from across Europe and the Black Sea region, while reinforcing the role of transnational cooperation in addressing common challenges related to economic competitiveness, climate resilience, and sustainable blue growth.

Speaking on the significance of the event, project representatives noted that participation in high-level international forums strengthens the visibility and impact of GROWTH4BLUE, fostering synergies with complementary initiatives and contributing to the development of a skilled and future-ready workforce for the Blue Economy.

Through its participation in the International Conference of Balkan and Black Sea Regions, GROWTH4BLUE reaffirmed its commitment to promoting innovation, regional cooperation, and sustainable development, contributing to a more resilient and competitive Blue Economy for the benefit of present and future generations.
